What a great night we had last month wrestling with Hugh’s input on the topic of ‘Belief’ – with or without God. Hugh challenged us to consider why adherence to any form of religion is in decline in most western liberal democracies, despite the research supporting faith being good for our health. He theorised this was due to two major factors which inherently compete with faith-based principles. First is the bombardment of propaganda from consumer mass marketing, proclaiming our entitlement to wealth and comfort. Retail therapy is portrayed as the path to personal fulfilment (and if it hasn’t happened yet, just buy more!) Second, the happiness industry promotes our entitlement to personal happiness - if we’re not perpetually happy (a recent concept), we should purchase a solution. These two factors working together produce a materialistic, ‘me’- centred culture. Alternatively, Christians (and people of most other faiths), value kindness, compassion and self-sacrifice on behalf of others. Sadly, the ‘all about me’ hedonistic culture is winning hands down, as many fall prey to this systematic conditioning while counter voices are not being heard. We are not helpless, however. Talk to your children and your grandchildren about what values actually count in life. Happiness is elusive when sought as an end in itself. Acceptance, kindness, love, faith and compassion all give meaning to life. According to Positive Psychologist, Professor Martin Seligman, happiness is a natural result of building up our well-being and satisfaction with life. He endorses PERMA principles of Positive emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning and Accomplishment. http://positivepsychologymelbourne.com.au/perma-model/ Jesus said, ‘I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.’ I continue to find that to be true. 當Hugh Mackay蒞臨本鎮時 (譯自Rev Karen的‘When Hugh Mackay came to town’) 去月我們榮幸得Mackay 先生講述有或沒有上神的‘信念’這富思考性的題目。 。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。 当Hugh Mackay蒞临本镇时 (譯自Rev Karen的‘When Hugh Mackay came to town’) 去月我们榮幸得Mackay 先生讲述有或沒有上神的‘信念’这富思考性的題目。
