Thinking Aloud

Defiance!

Don’t bother asking me my age because I won’t tell you. I don’t see it as relevant as I aim to be as physically, mentally and spiritually fit as I can be, for as long as possible. Defying the odds and actually improving in all three areas is my aim! I see others around me - at the gym for example - with a similar attitude to life.

Are you surprised that a Christian minister would uplift the value of defiance? Actually, the Christian faith is based upon a revolutionary leader who stood against corrupt authorities, siding with the marginalised and oppressed. Defiance is needed in such cases, yet we are anxiously aware of the personal cost. A good understanding of our cause in order to commit for the long haul, is important. It takes courage to begin, so imagine the preferred future and allow the vision to motivate you to action.

My role in Lane Cove as the Community Chaplain defies our cultural ‘norm’ of church. This is my pulpit, and my ‘place’ and ‘people’ are the whole of Lane Cove. Some spiritual practices I encourage include: appreciative habits (especially walking in nature); meditation and life balance; stimulating conversation around food; love, inclusion and encouragement of others; the achievement of goals together; experiencing life in all its fullness.

I am available to talk with you over a coffee, or you are welcome to join in some of our activities. A new ‘Edge’ group, aiming to defy our mental and physical limitations through active, edgy activities, is on the agenda. It will be fun for the adventurous! Contact me if you would like to know more.

My defiant leader (Jesus) is quoted as saying:‘The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.’ The Bible, John 10:10 (NIV).
