My chaplaincy style would be classed as a ‘reflective practitioner’. I like to listen, experience, reflect with others and try again, in the light of that new wisdom. This experiential practice mirrors my own ‘unlikely’ faith journey. Time and again, God has ‘shown up’ in my life in unexpected ways, to my awe and often, delight. As a child raised by atheist parents, God’s self-revelation needed to be emphatically convincing, to continue to be persuasive in my life. It remains a source of ongoing hope for me.
Sometimes I think the world has gone mad with its insistence upon scientific, rational proofs to ground the intangible. However, our viewpoints are coloured by our environment and core beliefs, sometimes causing us to make incorrect assumptions. Achieving a balance between these two poles is important. Merely distrusting our own and others’ experience and suprarational encounters, becomes a sad place to be, and lacks hope. Sharing stories amidst a community of diverse yet supportive people, helps clarify experiential truth amidst our assumptions and biases. As your stories and context are unique, they have value in contributing to mutual learning. Such discussion encourages us all to move forward together, better informed, to engage with our rapidly changing world. I would encourage us all to explore ways we can adopt this approach to our relationship with others. I will host an open, respectful discussion to follow Hugh Mackay’s Beyond Belief book talk, to enable a deeper exploration of our faith and beliefs. When: Wednesday 19 October 2016, 7.30pm Venue: Lane Cove Uniting Church hall, corner of Figtree St & Centennial Ave, Lane Cove Supper provided. An RSVP would be appreciated: Email [email protected] or Phone 9428 2240 ‘Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love’, (a quote from the Bible in 1 Corinthians 13:13, New Living Translation).
